Animal Health & Bioscience FAQs

Engineering Answers for Critical Processes

Practical answers for production, maintenance, engineering and quality teams working with material compatibility, valve selection, pump sizing, dispensing repeatability and controls integration.

How should wetted-component materials be selected?

Evaluate the complete operating environment—not the process fluid alone. Review the fluid composition and concentration, cleaning chemicals, temperatures, pressure or vacuum, sterilization method, elastomer compatibility and applicable FDA, USP Class VI or other material requirements.

The pump, valve, diaphragm, seals, tubing, fittings and connectors should be reviewed as one complete wetted path. A component described as sanitary or food grade is not automatically compatible with every formulation or cleaning process.

When should a media-separated valve be used?

A media-separated valve is generally preferred when the liquid must remain isolated from the actuator and internal metal components. This can improve chemical compatibility, reduce internal or unswept volume and support more controlled dispensing of reagents, samples, cleaning fluids and other sensitive media. Standard solenoid valves remain appropriate for controlling compressed air supplied to cylinders, actuators and process valves.

What information is needed to properly size a pump?

Start with the required flow rate and total discharge pressure or system head. Then document suction conditions, viscosity, specific gravity, temperature, solids size and concentration, shear sensitivity, construction materials, cleaning procedures and duty cycle. The best pump technology depends on the complete operating point, not flow rate alone.

What affects dispensing accuracy and repeatability?

Consistent dispensing depends on pressure stability, valve response time, fluid viscosity and temperature, tubing length and diameter, nozzle geometry, trapped air, internal fluid-path volume, sensor accuracy and calibration. For higher-precision applications, pressure or flow feedback can be added so the controls system adjusts to actual process conditions.

What should be included in a controls-integration plan?

A complete plan should address normal operation, process quality, maintenance and failure conditions. Typical elements include PLC and HMI programming, recipe controls, pressure and flow monitoring, pump and valve sequencing, alarms, interlocks, dry-run and overpressure protection, data collection, cleaning-cycle automation and defined safe states.

The controls strategy should be developed alongside the mechanical and fluid-system design so components are sized correctly and sensors provide meaningful process feedback.
