Compressed Air Maintenance Questions

How often should an industrial air compressor be serviced?

Service intervals depend on compressor type, operating hours, duty cycle, ambient conditions and manufacturer requirements. Preventive maintenance commonly includes oil and filter changes, separator inspection, belt or coupling checks, cooling-system cleaning, condensate checks and verification of operating pressures and temperatures.

What are the warning signs that a compressor needs service?

Rising discharge temperature, abnormal noise or vibration, frequent alarms, excessive oil consumption, longer run times, unstable system pressure, increased energy use and reduced air delivery can all indicate developing compressor or system issues.

What causes excessive moisture in a compressed air system?

Moisture problems may result from an undersized or malfunctioning dryer, high inlet temperature, clogged drains, inadequate aftercooling, poor condensate removal or operating conditions beyond the dryer’s rated capacity. The complete air treatment system should be reviewed rather than evaluating the dryer alone.

How can we tell if our compressed air dryer is performing correctly?

Dryer performance should be evaluated against the required pressure dew point and actual plant conditions. Technicians may also inspect inlet and outlet temperatures, drains, filters, refrigeration or desiccant performance, pressure drop and alarm history to identify loss of drying capacity.

What causes pressure drop in a compressed air system?

Excessive pressure drop can be caused by dirty filters, undersized piping, restrictive fittings, poorly sized dryers, demand spikes, partially closed valves or distribution-system limitations. Measuring pressure at multiple points in the system helps identify where the restriction is occurring.

How do compressed air leaks affect compressor maintenance and operating cost?

Leaks increase artificial demand, forcing compressors to run longer and cycle more frequently. That can increase energy use, accelerate maintenance requirements and reduce available system capacity. A leak survey can help identify losses that may not be obvious during normal production.

What can cause oil carryover in compressed air?

Potential causes include a saturated or damaged separator, incorrect oil level, excessive operating temperature, improper lubricant, restricted scavenging components or compressor operating conditions outside the intended range. Downstream air quality requirements should also be considered when diagnosing oil-related issues.
