What is a Rotary Screw Air Compressor?

A rotary screw air compressor is a highly efficient, continuous-duty air compression system that uses two meshed rotors to trap and compress air. The machine contains two helical-shaped rotary screws, which act as positive displacement mechanisms, reducing air volume and generating compressed air in a continuous, sweeping motion for a wide variety of industrial and manufacturing applications. This design allows for a steady and reliable air supply, making rotary screw compressors a preferred choice for high-demand environments.

Compared to reciprocating or piston compressors, rotary screw models produce less pulsation, ensuring smoother and more consistent airflow. They are also highly energy-efficient, capable of delivering large volumes of compressed air with minimal fluctuations in pressure. Additionally, their low-maintenance design and ability to operate in all weather conditions makes them ideal for businesses requiring uninterrupted, high-performance air compression.

What is an Oil-Flooded Air Compressor?
Rotary screw air compressors are available in oil-flooded or oil-free configurations, each suited to different applications. An oil-flooded air compressor uses lubricating oil to seal, cool, and lubricate the rotors inside the air-end. This process enables the compressor to achieve high pressures efficiently and deliver compressed air in a single stage, ensuring reliable performance in demanding industrial environments.

Before the compressed air leaves the system, the oil is separated and filtered out, preventing contamination while recycling clean air back into the air-end.  The ability to recapture and reuse oil makes oil-flooded compressors highly efficient and cost-effective, extending their lifespan while reducing overall maintenance costs.
How Does an Oil-Flooded Air Compressor Work?
Oil-flooded rotary screw compressors use a continuous supply of lubricating oil to optimize performance and reduce wear. As air enters the suction side of the air-end, it moves through the vanes of the rotating screws. The oil fills the space between the two rotor screws, forming a hydraulic seal that enhances compression efficiency while simultaneously transferring mechanical energy between the driving and driven rotors.

Once compressed, the oil and air mixture exits the rotor housing and enters a separation system, where oil is removed from the air. The air is then cooled, filtered, and redirected into the system for use, while the oil is recycled back into the compression process. This closed-loop design ensures consistent, high-pressure performance while minimizing energy waste and maximizing reliability.
Oil-Flooded Air Compressor Industrial Applications
Rotary screw compressors provide a continuous, cost-effective compressed air solution for a variety of industries that demand high reliability and efficiency. Unlike reciprocating/piston air compressors, which are best suited for intermittent use, oil-flooded air compressors are engineered for continuous 24/7 operation. Their ability to supply steady, uninterrupted airflow makes them essential for businesses where compressed air is a critical component of production and any downtime could result in significant losses.

Industries that benefit from these compressors include general manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, mining, food and beverage processing, and chemical production. Whether your facility requires high-powered air compression for heavy-duty machinery or a consistent supply of clean, dry air for sensitive processes, rotary screw compressors offer the durability, efficiency, and performance needed to keep operations running smoothly.
